Design Proposal

My design proposal is to create a building for the community to gather and use the facilities, but also and more importantly to provide the local community with historical background of the site in Coogee. My intension for the community centre is to create more beach awareness with different initiatives that community members can get involved in such as surf life saving causes. It is the idea to bring back the beach culture of Coogee. This will be achieved through a monumental building for the community, which reflects the surfing life style.
Over the years with the changing demographics the culture and meaning of living in the community of Coogee has been lost. So the community centre is to provide historical in site and meaning for the current residents. Bring the local community closer together as they understand the long history of the beach culture. The main attraction is the courses or classes that will be held to teach people to make surf boards from scratch and then put them into use on the beach. This is an interactive activity that will be held and displayed in the lower level of the community centre along with other local material, such as Aboriginal art works which reflect the first inhabitants of the area.
The café is more of a playful form of architecture, but is based on the metaphorical idea of a space that responds to changing conditions which is reflected in the ocean and surfers looking for the ultimate conditions.

Draft Floor Plan 1:100

The long Connecting walk way is to represent the strong back bone of the local community. The suburb of Coogee has a long history and with this come a strong bond with its permanent residents. So for a community centre in Coogee it needed to reflect the long history of the place and take in its local environment.

Also my intension in the planning of the centre was so that it can be adapted for many different uses. As Coogee now has a young demographic which majority are non permanent this centre has to be able to cope with changes which may occur.
The plan can be adopted by a child care facility etc.

I would like to utilize the space under the grand stand, which will be renovated for the workspace for the local youth to learn a craft and make surf boards etc, and it will house the double garage for the large machinery for the oval, lawn mower, sweepers power tools and general maintenance equipment ladders etc

The cafe is to cater for the general public throughout the week and also in the weekend when there are sporting games held at the oval. The cafe is close to the play equipment in the back corner, this is to utilize the facility as when iv been to the site the play ground is closed off so I would like to open it up for families to enjoy with the cafe outdoor area overlooking the play ground.

Site Plan 1:200

Mappings

Mapping Sheet- The way I set out doing my mappings was to base them on a site map which became a consistent feature in all my sheets. I created a visual journey which I undertook within and around the site, and illustrated the feelings, emotions and understandings I received on this journe.

Reciprocity - The relationship with the built environment and its surroundings. When I looked back towards the site i got this image which was of this very defined horizon line created by the roof tops of the buildings, but in the foreground the palm trees felt so lively as the wind blow through them.

Threshold- This image defines how we create boundaries and allow certain openings to different people. This was an interesting image as it was a purpose built opening on the long timber railing fence.

Insertion- In this image I removed all the natural elements and only drew the things that have been placed in the surrounding environment, and it was evident from this drawing how much we have disturbed the natural environment. this drawing is looking down towards the ocean and all you can see are power lines, roof tops and these unusual green boxes.

Materiality- Dark heavy brick construction. The feeling I got when in the back corner near the grand stand was of a large heavy mass which created dark corners.

Infrastructure- This drawing maps out the bus routes around the site and also identifies the major bus stops. This created an image of a computer like chip

Threshold- The heavy dark in fill are representations of the private building around the site and the empty white spaces represent the public areas. Also indicates a free flow of traffic which these public areas provide

Materiality- This combined image and water colour conveys the spectacular surrounding environments. I included this as I felt I was a magnificent image of the ocean and horizon line.
